Thermac supports one of the UK's largest asbestos removal projects at Millennium Mills, London

Friday, February 05, 2016

Thermac’s unique single-source solution for precision dustless blasting equipment and airline breathing apparatus has been instrumental in one of the UK’s largest asbestos removal projects, at the iconic Millennium Mills building on London’s Docklands.

Thermac worked with its client Rhodar and provided the essential equipment that was needed to remove 53,000 of asbestos containing paint and restore the building to its original structural shell, while maintaining many of building’s original features.

The Millennium Mills site presented a complex project with widespread asbestos contamination in the wall paints, thermal insulation pipework, partitions and flooring. Thermac’s Precision dustless blasting equipment uses a combination of water vapour, compressed air and an abrasive material, which in the case of Millennium Mills was recycled glass particles to remove all asbestos paint/debris and strip back the surface of the walls and ceiling to the required raw state. The equipment proved highly effective, contributing to the successful removal of a staggering 660 tonnes of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) over a 10-month period.

The blasting equipment was utilised in combination with Thermac’s latest airline breathing apparatus, which has been designed to provide continuous high purity air for operatives working in hazardous environments for extended periods.

Thermac General Manager, Campbell Rodden stated: “The Millennium Mills project was a fantastic project for Thermac to be involved in. It perfectly demonstrated how our precision dustless blasting equipment and airline breathing apparatus can be combined and used in high-rise buildings with multiple operatives working safely in a hazardous environment for extended periods. Both are available for hire from Thermac, providing both a single-source equipment solution and a full range of consumables to suit projects of this nature.”

The asbestos removal and transformation of the derelict Millennium Mills is part of the £3.5billion Docklands Silvertown Regeneration project to create Silvertown Quay, a new business, commercial and residential development spanning 62 acres.
